Gotta Have It: Tom’s

Call it a Handyman’s dream (minus the butt-crack!)-these past few seasons has all been about the making the blue-collar man’s wardrobe fashionable. Think overalls, workman boots and these amazing on-trend shoes from Tom’s. Adding a vibrant splatter of colour to Spring’s otherwise neutral colour palette (grey, cream, nude) and ringing in at only $54.00, they’re definitely on my must-have list for summer.

Grin and Bare it: Crop Tops for 2010

2009 had us flirting with the idea of crop tops, done modestly with plenty of layering and no real exposed midriffs on display. 2010 gives us reason to put our gym memberships to good use, as crop tops are definitely on the fashion forecast for summer and beyond. Although I consider myself to be a reasonable in-shape person, the notion of belly-baring in any degree leaves me in a cold sweat. Minis? Marvelous. Backless? Bring it on. Plunging necklines? Been there, done that.  Cropped tops? FML. The thing about the midriff is the nature of the beast. It’s inconsistant, changing throughout the day with every Diet Coke, pretzel and bagel consumed. Being 5’3 and short-waisted as it is, you’d have to come at me with scissors for the lower half of my top. If you’re lovin this nod to the 90′s, bring your willpower, or you’ll be giving a whole new meaning to the term “Muffin Top”.

Trendspotting: Raffia

Dries Van Noten

Floral’s homely stepsister- Raffia, is making a resurgance this year in accessories of all shapes and sizes. Like the unfortunate stepsister, Raffia knows the importance of added bells and whistles, and she does not disappointment in her offerings this Spring. At Diane Von Furstenburg, this formerly bland fiber takes centre stage with saturated purple. With sleek hardware, leather embellishment and interesting detailing, these raffia goodies are anything but second-rate.

Current Obbession: Clear Lucite Earrings

Do you ever stumble across a fashion find and become immediately obsessed with possessing that pretty-little-something? It’s rare when I have that “gotta have it now” feeling, but while looking at an old pic of Sarah Jessica sporting the most gorgeous pair of clear earrings (crystal or lucite- whatever, I WANT), I got. Need it. Have to have it NOW. It’s odd how something somewhat passe, can suddenly feel so fresh. The hunt is on for the perfect pair….stay tuned!

FFF News: Christian Ronaldo for Emporio – The Brown Bag Edition

El Caliente!!! “It’s gettin hot in herre, so take off all your clothes…”  wait, what was I saying???!! Right- El Caliente!!! Move over Becks- there’s a new soccer stud in town- from the neck down. Real Madrid’s resident hunk, Christian Rolando, is the latest model for Emporio Armani Men’s Underwear & Armani Jeans. There’s no denying Rolando’s got a bangin’ body. Unfortunately, the first thing I thought when I managed to peel my eyes away from the lower half was “drag queen”. The chiseled cheekbones, the stud earrings and the kicker- penciled and plucked tadpole eyebrows- it’s Eurotrash ballin’ outta control, in the worst way.

The New Romantics: Lingerie as Outerwear

In recent months there has been a surge in mentioning, quite obviously, the unmentionables. No longer content in leaving a little something to the imagination, fashion lovers everywhere have taken to making their lingerie conversation pieces. Bras doubling as tops have become mainstream (have a look in H&M, they’re everywhere). Although ballsy, the look can be quite chic if done right. When paired with a high-waisted paper-bag short and boyfriend blazer, the look is fun and playful if all pieces are neutral colours (think charcoal, grey, peach, pink). I wouldn’t dare try this look in black or lace, as it would sharply stumble into S&M dominatrix catagory…meow.

Is the bra top practical? Hell no. But I say if you’re under 35 with a bangin body and comfortable being the centre of attention (YOU WILL BE), then try this fleeting trend before it’s promptly shelved in 2010!

90′s Floral

This is a trend I’ve been reluctant to embrace, although it won’t go away and seems to be holding strong into the New Year,  so I must mention it…90′s floral. Picture Kate Moss circa 1994, and you get the feeling. Many ladies have worn it throughout the past year, although few have worn it well. It takes a certain amount of chutzpah to pull it off such a dainty print without looking like an overgrown Lolita. If you’re feeling this trend, I suggest going all out with the Nirvana theme and pairing it with broken in combat boots, mused hair or a messy bun, berry stained lips and requisite leather bomber. ROCK ON!

Rachel Bilson in 90's floral, YES.

Trendspotting: Dusty Rose- No longer a dirty word

Until recently, the term “dusty rose” induced flashbacks of my Mum’s hideously on-trend living room, circa 1992: wall-to-wall dusty rose paint, lampshades and full carpeting of dusty rose in all it’s glory. Dusty and downright dirty.

Luckily, my re-acquaintance with dusty rose was pleasant and in perfect proportion, as the colour was showcased all over the runway for Spring 2010. Soft, feminine and flattering on all skin types, this Spring’s  pink, lilac, peach and gray will all be of the dusty variety. I welcome this romantic palette with open arms and bid a fond farewell to the 80′s influenced harsh tones of last season.
